NEW ORDER

Surveys of modern art in the form of biennials and triennials are meant to serve as status updates on where art is right now—and where it is heading. Praised for getting it exactly right by the New York Times, the ICP’s 2013 Triennial, A Different Kind of Order, which opened this past Friday, has been hailed as “its best yet.” Crowd-sourced from the most interesting contemporary photo and video projects around the world, the show features 28 international artists creating work in the present climate of widespread economic, social, and political instability.

STRIKE AN “IMPOSE”

Ten years, ten photographers: Brooklyn’s indie photojournalism site Impose is turning 10 this year. To celebrate a decade of documenting rollicking rock shows and hip cultural happenings, they’re going to party like rock stars with their first photo exhibit opening at BK’s Secret Project Robot tonight. See prints culled from the past 10 years by 10 up-and-coming photogs, including Nate Dorr, Sam Horine, and Joe Perez, among others. Check out more than 50 images, sip free Reyka cocktails, and catch a live performance by Alan Watts, plus visual projections by EyeBodega. Go ahead and Impose!

BIG PICTURE

Catch the last weekend of the Gregory Crewdson doc at Film Forum before it closes on Tuesday. Often working with big-budget movie setups, Crewdson’s elaborate large-scale stills present narratives that tell feature-length stories—without a script or moving image. Says Film Forum, “Ben Shapiro’s fascinating profile of the acclaimed artist includes stories of his Park Slope childhood (in which he tried to overhear patients of his psychologist father), his summers in the bucolic countryside (which he now imbues with a sense of dread and foreboding), and his encounter with Diane Arbus’s work in 1972 at age 10.” (Talk about precocious Brooklyn kids.)

REMEMBERING NIRVANA
It’s been 18 years since Kurt Cobain’s tragic passing on April 5, 1994, and to mark his
memorial, the Morrison Hotel Gallery in Soho opens “Jesse Frohman’s
Kurt Cobain Images” today. According the gallery’s website, Frohman
took a winding path to photography: After studying economics at the
University of Michigan, he moved to New York and switched
gears—picking up a camera and never looking back. Over the course of
his career, he’s profiled celebs and musicians, including Woody Allen,
Lenny Kravitz, and Green Day, and in 1993, he had the honor of
photographing the Nirvana frontman less than six months before his
passing. Check out some of Cobain’s iconic images.

FACEBOOK FACE-OFF
Does the thought of being unwittingly tagged in an incredibly
unflattering photo make your chest tighten? Do you compulsively check
the post-event coverage of your friend’s birthday parties to make sure
you haven’t been caught looking bad—and worse, identified? Apparently,
you’re not alone. According to recent survey by the Center for Eating
Disorders at Sheppard Pratt posted on Allure.com “nearly half of the
600 respondents reported pressure to look ‘camera ready’ at social
events” and 51 percent felt more self-conscious about their bodies
because of FB photos. Yikes!
