Now that it’s too cold for fire escape herb gardens, you might be considering buying a few houseplants to brighten up your apartment on gray winter days. However, keeping plants in NYC can be challenging, explains indoor gardening expert and author of “The Unexpected Houseplant” Tovah Martin. She keeps her home at a less-than-cozy 55 degrees, and while there’s always throwing on a DKNY Cozy, it isn’t just the clanking radiators and high heat, it’s the dry air. Says Martin, “Moisture is the issue. If you add a humidifier, that will be good for you and the plants. They run out of moisture, and so do you.”

WINTER WONDERING
It’s Groundhog Day! But instead of focusing on whether or not there
are six more weeks of winter, the bigger question is, “When will
winter really hit us hard?” This is New York after all, and by this
time last year we’d already trudged through one major blizzard. Now
it’s February with nary a slush-fest in sight (except, of course, that
freakish October storm). Sure, it’s great to still be rocking heels
without the perils of icy street, but what about a good old-fashioned
snowball fight or sledding in the park? Or an excuse to drink hot
cocoa? The oddest part? The NOAA predicted we could see above-average
snowfall because of the Arctic Oscillation. Hm. Better be careful what
you wish for…
