ONE BROKE GIRL

“Girls” meets “Fame” in “Frances Ha,” a film about a 27-year-old girl living in Brooklyn, who’s trying to make it as a dancer in New York City when the proverbial carpet gets pulled out from under her: She loses her job, her best friend/roommate moves out, and she’s left to couch-surf and sublet. This new indie from Oscar-nominated director Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale”) stars Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script, through a comedic quarter-life crisis. While the film features Georges Delerue music from French New Wave classics, the MGMT song “Time to Pretend” feels slightly more apt.

NEW ORDER

Surveys of modern art in the form of biennials and triennials are meant to serve as status updates on where art is right now—and where it is heading. Praised for getting it exactly right by the New York Times, the ICP’s 2013 Triennial, A Different Kind of Order, which opened this past Friday, has been hailed as “its best yet.” Crowd-sourced from the most interesting contemporary photo and video projects around the world, the show features 28 international artists creating work in the present climate of widespread economic, social, and political instability.

GREAT GATSBY

Perhaps the most eagerly awaited film of the year, “The Great Gatsby” opens today after a major push-back on its release date—and the expectations are great. The trailer teases a whirling shambolic of the Roaring Twenties directed by Baz Luhrmann, starring Leonard DiCaprio as the millionaire Jay Gatsby, and Tobey Maguire as the Midwesterner Nick Carraway. See the movie before its opening night at Cannes on May 15—and then toast good living at the Empire Room with a Gatsby-themed cocktail program featuring the New York Daisy, Gatsby’s Bootleg Punch, and more.

UPSTREAM COLOR

After lighting up the festival circuit from Sundance to Berlin, “Upstream Color” has been playing to critical acclaim at the IFC Center. One local critic called it, “Heart-stoppingly beautiful…one of the most transcendent experiences of my moviegoing life.” The long anticipated follow-up from award-winning writer-director Shane Carruth, this romantic thriller is described as “mythic, mysterious, and sensuous.” Carruth has been hailed as one of the most original new voices in American cinema and his latest follows a couple brought together by tragedy as they try to reconcile the fragments of their lives.

Only two more days of the Tribeca Film Festival and this year’s closing weekend includes: movie stars directing rock stars (see: Vampire Weekend playing Roseland Ballroom on Sunday), indie directors interviewing Hollywood powerhouses (check out: “Black Swan” filmmaker Darren Aronofsky chatting with Clint Eastwood on Saturday), and restored classics making debuts (think: the 30th anniversary of Martin Scorsese’s “The King of Comedy,” starring Robert De Niro, for closing night). Sunday also reveals the fest’s top winners. Make it a weekend at the movies.

TWILIGHT TIME AT TFF

In the twilight day of the Tribeca Film Festival (three more days to go), vampires are making a comeback. Tonight “Interview With a Vampire”screenwriter Neil Jordan, who picked up an Oscar for “The Crying Game,”attempts to draw fresh blood from the genre with his new fantasy thriller “Byzantium,”screening at 9:30 p.m. with encore showings tomorrow and Saturday. Meanwhile, the New York-raised and Columbia University-educated band Vampire Weekend plays a closing-night concert on Sunday directed by actor Steve Buscemi at the Roseland Ballroom.

“BEFORE” SERIES

Like a “56 Up” for hopeless romantics, director Richard Linklater’s “Before” franchise has become a lovey-dovey genre all its own. Starting with the 1995 meet-cute flick “Before Sunrise,” in which Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke begin their star-crossed journey to 2004’s “Before Sunset,” the trilogy now picks up their love story nine years later in “Before Midnight.” Set in the Greek isles, the couple once again finds themselves at a relationship crossroads looking at how life’s up and downs have kept them together. Has Linklater saved the best for last? Find out at the Tribeca Film Festival’s screening tonight.

It can quickly turn into a scene recalling Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful masterpiece “The Birds.” Celebrate the 50^th anniversary of this classic flick with a free outdoor screening tonight through the Tribeca Drive-In series starting at 8:15 p.m. Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, and Suzanne Pleshette, this meet-cute story turns weird—make that really weird—when a couple witnesses an unsettling bird attack in a small California town.
