Championing his own brand of sunshine pop—and super-curly hair—singer Darwin Deez seems intent on reworking the definition of “hair band” with the release of his second album “Songs for Imaginative People.” Raised on bands like Weezer, Nirvana, and Nada Surf in North Carolina, this oddball, BK-based musician has been playing in bands since he was 12 and kicking around NYC’s indie circuit since dropping out of Wesleyan a few years back—a university that coincidentally launched acts like MGMT and Santigold. Catch him tonight as he has a very good hair day and headlines the Bowery Ballroom.

After selling out the Bowery Ballroom on Friday night, San Fran-based indie folk rockers Thao and the Get Down Stay Down hit the Bell House tonight for one more NYC show before heading up to Toronto. Over the band’s career, they’ve toured with Xiu Xiu and Rilo Kiley, and worked with Andrew Bird for the title track on their 2009 album “Know Better Learn Faster.”Now playing in support for their latest efforts, “We the Common,”released in early 2013, Thao says, “it’s a lot less about my problems and more about how I could be a better participant in my life.”Wise words.

Touring in support of their latest album “Piramida,” Danish electropop band Efterklang plays the Bowery Ballroom on Saturday. Comprised of three childhood friends, Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, and Rasmus Stolberg, Pitchfork.com has said, “one of the genuine pleasures of Efterklang’s music is that you never know what sound will be heard first on any given track. It might be a mournful swoop of brass, a gently loping drumbeat, or an unexpected splash of New Wavey synth.”Their latest takes its name from Russia with love inspired by travels to a faraway ghost town on the Arctic Circle.

While StyleList.com takes a look back at her big sis’ ultra-glamorous looks in 2012, Solange has stepped out with a more downtown look—rocking big Diana Ross-style curls and plenty of indie cred. On stage, Solange’s distinctive nouveau Motown packs some edge and an electronic downbeat. Says Billboard.com, “Solange captivates with ‘True’ songs,” playing up the name of her 2012 seven-track EP “True” produced by Dev Hynes. Stay tuned…

Described as “a rollicking collection of era-spanning anthems” by The New Yorker, Escort is starting what might just turn into a yearly tradition for the next decade: The First Annual Halloween Show at Webster Hall. Hot on the heels of kicking off their East Coast tour in D.C., this Saturday, the NYC-based, 17-piece, dance-music ensemble headlines the stage at Halloween HQ with St Lucia, DJ Druzz of The Rapture, and Penguin Prison. Founded by Eugene Cho and Dan Balis and fronted by Adeline Michèle, this big band is where the decades collide across disco, funk, and soul. It’s an electro symphony!

AGE-OLD DILEMMA

Lianne La Havas problem is she’s not in love with a man nearly twice her age—or perhaps that’s not a problem at all actually. The London-born singer-songwriter, who is half-Greek and half-Jamaican, catapulted to fame with her song “Age,” a whimsical song about this age-old dilemma. However, unlike the Shabba Ranks dancehall tune, La Havas croons about falling for a younger heartbreaker instead of a guy her father’s age. Since landing on the cultural radar, she’s been nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2012, shared studio time with Prince, and opened for her longtime hero Erykah Badu. Now she’s hitting the stage with her loyal guitar for a show at the Bowery Ballroom.

On moving from Kentucky to Brooklyn, founding band member of VHS or
Beta Mark Palgy once observed, “The pace in New York is a lot faster,
and I love that. You absorb the energy of the people around you here
by osmosis.” Circa 2007 to 2008, the duo of Palgy and Craig Pfunder
were galloping ahead with their album “Bring on the Comets” and a slew
of remixes for Juan MacLean, My Morning Jacket, and Tegan and Sara,
among other. Now back with all horsepower firing forward, they’re
playing the Bowery Ballroom tonight in support of their nine-day-old
release “Diamonds & Dub” just out last week.
