Even if you’re not out in LI this weekend, it doesn’t mean you can’t party by the water: It might not be the beach, but the Gowanus Canal still has its charms and, as long as the weather permits, plenty of fun in the sun to offer. Under a grove of poplar trees, the masterminds behind Mister Saturday Night, Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin, return for another summer of their outdoor spinoff Mister Sunday Afternoon. Nosh on tacos and sip homemade sangria and Brooklyn-brewed beer, all while showing off your skills on the dance floor—or the newly installed Ping-Pong table.

For six months in 1964, the humble borough of Queens was the center of the world: Host of the World’s Fair, this borough-less-traveled showcased the third and most futuristic installment of the global expo focusing on the theme of “Peace Through Understanding.” It was a landmark time for the space age and the 12-story Unisphere Fountain held pride of place. Learn more about this urban gem in Corona Park with a Saturday afternoon guided tour led by an Urban Park Ranger—and snap a great Instagram pic in front of the giant globe.

Set in the woodlands of Ohio, “The Kings of Summer” is a coming-of-age flick about three teens who decide to break free from the confines of their suburban homes and build a house in the woods, away from nagging parents. Think of it as “Into the Wild” updated for millennials with “Parks and Recreation”-style humor (one of the film’s stars also happens to be the cantankerously funny Nick Offerman of “Parks and Recreation”). See this movie in the open air through Rooftop Films this Saturday—or wait until it premieres in air-conditioned theaters on May 31.

The Internet is going to prom! Party with New York’s hottest startup stars, media elite, and venture capitalists at the annual Webutante Ball taking place at Marquee tonight. Join Internet famous folks, like past attendees David Karp founder of the recently sold Tumblr and Nick Denton founder of Gawker, among the best and brightest young things from FB, Google, Twitter, YouTube, and beyond, for dancing, drinking, and of course, social-networking IRL. But the big question is who will be crowned prom king and queen from this year’s A list of web-stars?

Muggy summer weather is on the way which means it’s time to find creative new ways to combat frizzed-out hair days—and stay cool. Refinery29.com offers up a look book of “braided hairstyle for every mood, from rebellious (Cara at the Met) to sweet (Freida Pinto’s glam crown) to blasé (K. Stew, fishtail braiding like she just don’t care).” Get some twisted inspiration and add a modern spin to a basic chignon with a duo of face-framing French braids like actress Alexis Knapp—or go bold with an entire pompadour made of braids like Emmy Rossum. From simple to complex, plaits are in.

Raised in New York City, photographer Ricky Powell spent much of the ’80s capturing a movement of downtown artists who were responsible for coining a new term, “famous for being famous.” Curated by Tono Radvany, a longtime friend and cataloguer of Powell’s work, the David Kesting Gallery presents “Ricky Powell” (through June 9), an exhibit that draws parallels between downtown Manhattan circa 1985 and Bushwick circa now. Shown in wall-size prints, Powell’s images, like “Jean-Michel Basquiat” and “Andy Warhol on Mercer Street Going to Tony Shafrazi Gallery” (1985), have newfound relevance.

“Girls” meets “Fame” in “Frances Ha,” a film about a 27-year-old girl living in Brooklyn, who’s trying to make it as a dancer in New York City when the proverbial carpet gets pulled out from under her: She loses her job, her best friend/roommate moves out, and she’s left to couch-surf and sublet. This new indie from Oscar-nominated director Noah Baumbach (“The Squid and the Whale”) stars Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script, through a comedic quarter-life crisis. While the film features Georges Delerue music from French New Wave classics, the MGMT song “Time to Pretend” feels slightly more apt.

Feeling lost in the Alphabet City of BB, CC, and DD products? Well, it’s time to double-down on your letters because the BB craze is expanding beyond skin creams, reports Fashionista.com. The popularity of these multitasking products surged 1,800 percent in 2012 alone, so not surprisingly, other markets are now eager to jump on the BB bandwagon, from hair and eye creams to beverages. Look for all-in-one benefits for eyes like hiding dark circles, reducing puffiness, minimizing fine lines, hydrating, and illuminating. All around, BB products are scoring As.

Surveys of modern art in the form of biennials and triennials are meant to serve as status updates on where art is right now—and where it is heading. Praised for getting it exactly right by the New York Times, the ICP’s 2013 Triennial, A Different Kind of Order, which opened this past Friday, has been hailed as “its best yet.” Crowd-sourced from the most interesting contemporary photo and video projects around the world, the show features 28 international artists creating work in the present climate of widespread economic, social, and political instability.

Comedian Seth Herzog, a.k.a. “the Zog,” might have no relation to Zog Sports, but he is a long-distance runner of sorts: His Tuesday night showcase Sweet is one of the longest-running events in New York’s downtown comedy scene and it’s been going strong for some eight years. Relocated to the renovated Slipper Room on the LES, Herzog, who works as Jimmy Fallon’s warm-up comic, hosts a lineup of local funnypeople which has included Todd Barry, Colin Quinn, and Dave Hill, among other surprise guests, like his mom (who’s also a regular).

There are three more days until Memorial Day weekend, which is not a ton of time to get bikini ready at this stage, but still not panic time yet (you still have roughly 4,320 minutes). However, instead of running to SoulCycle before, after, and during work, or doing an extreme juice cleanse, stick to your regular regimen, and follow Glamour’s crash course for looking amazing before you hit the sand for beach volleyball with some beauty shortcuts, like a 30-second trick for toning up with tinted body moisturizer and a three-minute secret for tummy flattening with a firming cream.

While fun-filled garden parties are one of the best parts of spring, the MoMA’s annual Party in the Garden this evening is poised to kick off party season with stylish revelry—complete with a performance by the Grammy-nominated band Fun. Honoring Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York, as well as artists Ellsworth Kelly and Cindy Sherman, tonight’s fete starts off with cocktails and dinner followed by an after-party at 9 p.m. It’s also a birthday party for Kelly, who will turn 90 on May 31! Take that as inspiration to feel young, set the world on fire, and burn brighter than the sun this summer.

Save the last dance for Tom Petty tonight. You might call the iconic American frontman and his band of heartbreakers, the kings of heartland rock—or at least the longest reigning ones. Formed in Gainesville, Florida, in 1976, the band has been churning out hits, like “American Girl,” “Free Fallin’,” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” for some 37 years. Cozy up with TPATHB for the first of a series of five intimate concerts at the Beacon Theatre starting tonight (shows are May 20, 21, 23, 25, and 26).

The Great GoogaMooga is back transforming Prospect Park into an amusement park of food, drink, and more. This year organizers have made changes to avoid the Disney-World-during-high-season lines and food shortage situations. This culinary carnival features some 85 food makers, 75 brews, 100 wines, and 20 musical acts, plus last-minute surprise pop-ups like Roberta’s Urban Ren Faire and trading cards. The food fest kicks off today with a hearty musical showcase featuring the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Flaming Lips. Go for the food, stay for the music.

It’s bring your bike to work day! With the city’s bike-sharing program set to launch on Memorial Day, Bike Month is kicking into high gear for its last weeks. Peddle to work today and then throw down your kickstand for a celebration of commuter cycling with an after-party in DUMBO. On your way to work, power up with free Kind bars and coffee at stations at the bridges, and then head over to the after-work biker party for a Reflective Fashion Show (safety is always in style), raffles for gear, food vendors, and a beer garden sponsored by the Brooklyn Brewery. Happy cycling!

Less than two weeks ago, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Latin-themed spinoff of ABC Kitchen opened in the adjacent space formerly occupied by Pipa. “Like its sister restaurant next door, ABC Cocina serves food made with locally sourced ingredients in a space designed by the senior creative team at ABC Carpet & Home. Dan Kluger, the chef from ABC Kitchen, is running the kitchen, turning out a menu of small plates and dishes that are cooked on a wood-fired grill,” reports Eater.com. The reviews are streaming in and the verdict is: caliente-spot.

Sparkling water is a great way to jazz up your eight-glasses-a-day regimen, but does it count as “real water.” Glamour.com decided to find out and the good news is chilled bubbly water is indeed just that: H2O with carbonation. However, the same rule doesn’t apply to sugary sodas, juices, or coffee, explains dietician and writer Erin Palinski, “Fluids rich in sugar—such as juice or caffeine—are less hydating due to water losses in digestion, as well as the diuretic properties of caffeine, but sparkling water contains no calories or sugar and is caffeine free, making it a great way to hydrate.”
