Fireflies in the park are a sure sign summer has arrived—bringing back memories of sleep-away camp and simpler pastimes. Opening yesterday at the Whitney, Japanese artist/writer Yayoi Kusama’s 2002 work “Fireflies on the Water” creates a reflective environment—both in space and in spirit—through lights, mirrors, and water. Get lost in your thoughts as you step into the room where 150 small lights twinkle overhead reflecting off the mirrors and water’s surface. Night or day, these glowing “fireflies” are simply magical.
