THE MTA’S WISHING WELL
It’s one of the most memorable scenes in “Goonies” when Stef tries to
stop the kids from collecting coins out of a wishing well, and Mouth
cynically responds, “This was my dream, my wish. And it didn’t come
true. So I’m taking it back.” The New York Times’ City Room blog has
discovered NYC has its own version of a wishing well—on the G line in
Brooklyn of all places. “At the Broadway station, hundreds of coins
lie beneath the water on the track bed. One commuter likened [it] to
‘the log ride at Disney World’ because of its cavelike appearance,
which includes stalagmites growing from fixtures and hundreds of
stalactites.” Some hope for a better job, others love, and one seventh
grader even wants to win the lottery: A penny and a Metrocard, the new
dollar and a dream.
