MARIMBA IN D MINOR
It was the marimba ringtone heard around the world last week, when New
York Philharmonic conductor Alan Gilbert halted the finale of Gustav
Mahler’s Ninth Symphony until the offending iPhone was silenced. This
week, Gilbert returns to the stage for a special program featuring
pianist Lang Lang performing Magnus Lindberg’s Feria and Bartók’s
Piano Concerto No. 2. Four nights of performances begin this evening
with a special preview open rehearsal this morning at 9:45 a.m.
(tickets for the warm-up session are only $18). The New York Times has
called Lang Lang, “The hottest artist on the classical music planet.”
Just don’t space out and forget to silence your phone.
