OFF THE GRID
New York is famous for its grid system layout and likewise one can
draw parallels between the work of artists Alfred Jensen and Sol
LeWitt. A tandem showing of their work opened this past Friday at the
Pace Gallery on East 57th Street. “Exhibited side-by-side, Jensen’s
colorful and tactile diagrammatic paintings and LeWitt’s minimalist
white structures reveal the vastly different outcomes that can arise
from similar conceptual foundations.” Jensen paints mathematical,
two-dimensional grids referencing pre-Colombian and Asian cultures and
textiles, while LeWitt three-dimensional sculptures veer
self-referential. Either way, it’s off the charts.
